MooTak and
Unrequited and
In The Shadow Of The Blood-Red Moon and
MooTak drabble 4a first cos this is a continuation drabble :X

Mooseok opens his eyes, wakened by a deep thirst and a cold that eats into his soul. He is aching all over. He tries to get up but the pain shooting up from his limbs freeze him to the ground.

The ground. Where he is lying in a pile of dead leaves, covered in dirt.

The forest is silent around him; the only sounds, the rustle of the leaves he is lying in, and a little trickle of water from somewhere behind his head.

Mooseok groans, the last thing he remembered was closing his eyes. And then he must have passed out and fallen off his horse, somewhere in the forests lining the Eastern Range.

He wonders how long he has been out for. He tries to whistle for his horse, but no sound comes out, his throat is parched. He tries to move his legs, but a sharp tinge from his right ankle forces him to lie still. Then he realises he has not been able to move his arm. He turns his head to his left, and to his horror, he realises he cannot feel his injured arm.
I am dying.

For the second time in his life, Mooseok feels vulnerable.

He reaches over with his good hand to where the blood has clotted into a dark mess that looks like it is eating the rest of the arm up. He clears a patch of ground with his fingers and dips into the semi-dried blood.

ㄱㅌ (a/n: first letters of Kyungtak in Hangeul)...

He pauses, barely enough strength to continue. He cannot make it obvious if the king’s guards come upon his body. He would know, if he saw it.

Mooseok passes out again.

I wish I had told you.

Kyungtak rides for 2 days and 1 night straight. He does not know where he is headed to, he just knows he has to get to the Eastern Range.

The forest is big and intimidating, especially in the night. He gets off his horse and takes the reign, walking slowly through. He knows not to shout and attract attention to his presence, he is near the townships of the eastern lords and their guards were not known to be compassionate. A cold chill runs down his spine, it has been 2 days and 1 night.

What if… NO! Kyungtak cannot bear to entertain the thought. His mind blocks it out immediately but he hastens his footsteps. He hears the sound of a stream nearby and heads towards it. Maybe Mooseok would be there.

He has lost track of time but the moon is high up in the sky, reflecting off the water and lighting the path beside the stream. Tired but refusing to give up, Kyungtak soldiers on. He wanders deeper and deeper into the forest, eyes peeled for any sign of Mooseok. He follows the stream, hoping the man would have followed his survival instinct and looked for water.

And then he sees a body. His eyes recognise the black of Mooseok’s robes first and then the moonlight bounces off the glimmer of a semi-sheathed sword lying a distance away.

Panic rises up in Kyungtak’s throat as he scrambles to the body.

‘MOOSEOK!’ he shouts, not paying heed to his surroundings.

He falls to the side of the body and hoists it up, turning the head so that he could see the face.

‘Mooseok, I’m here. I’m here. I found you. Wake up, please!’ Kyungtak pleads, fingers rubbing worriedly over Mooseok’s pale face. His physician training kicks in and he feels for a pulse along Mooseok’s neck.

He shakes his head, refusing to believe. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he tries again.

There. There! A faint pulse. Mooseok is still alive, but barely.

His eyes fall upon the man’s left arm which is bound up in a ripped up cloth which is smeared black with clotted blood. His heart sinks as his physician experience tells him it is not good news. He checks the rest of Mooseok’s body and realises he is covered in bruises and cuts, probably from a fall from a height.

His horse.

His ankle is swollen as well.

Kyungtak is in despair. He needs to clean the wound and get Mooseok to shelter.

‘Mooseok, I’m here. Can you hear me?’

Mooseok finds himself in a field with tall swaying reeds that come up to his waist, in the middle of nowhere. His arm does not hurt anymore and he can walk well. His hand goes automatically to his waist for his sword but it is not there. Confused, he looks around, hoping to see someone or something so he can figure his way out of there.

‘Oppa.’ a voice behind him speaks. A very familiar voice, one that even after so many years, he still recognises. He feels his heart breaking as he spins around and looks into the eyes of his dead sister, Inhwa.

‘Inhwa! What.. where are you? What are you doing here? Where am I?’

Inhwa walks slowly up to Mooseok and takes his hand, her expression is soft and her smile is sad.

‘Oppa. I’ve come to take you home.’

‘What do you mean? Inhwa, where are we?’

‘We’re in Purgatory. I’ve come to take you to Mother and Father. We’ll be reunited. All of us.’

Mooseok stares at her, disbelieving.

‘You mean.. you mean I’m dead?’

Then he realises. Inhwa’s face is free of marks, the marks of measles which had cruelly taken her life way too early. He is dead.

Inhwa nods, a bittersweet expression on her face.

‘Let’s go home, oppa.’ She starts walking, pulling on his hand.

Mooseok follows, too shocked and confused to do anything else. He walks further and further away from the field. Then suddenly, he hears another voice. A male one, one full of grief and desperation.

‘Mooseok, I’m here. Can you hear me?’

Kyungtak! Mooseok stops and whirls around, looking for the source. It is back where he came from.

‘Oppa?’ Inhwa has stopped and is looking at him curiously.

And then Mooseok realises, he has to choose.

‘Can you come with me? Back to where I came from?’ he asks, voice soft. He knows the answer before she answers.

She shakes her head mutely, eyes sorrowful.

‘Mooseok. Please. Wake up. I’m here.’

Kyungtak’s voice is like a magnet, pulling at him. Pulling at his heart.

He lets go of Inhwa’s hand, tears brimming over as he kneels down in front of her, pulling her into a tight embrace.

‘Tell Mother and Father I am sorry. I am sorry, dear Inhwa. But I cannot come home yet. I love you all. Please wait for me.’

The last thing he remembers as he turns to walk away, is of a solitary tear slipping down Inhwa’s face as she mutely waves goodbye to him.

Kyungtak rubs at his face, trying to stop the tears from falling as he calls out for Mooseok to wake up.

He turns away from the body as he finally lets go, heaving as the tears spill out of his eyes. His fingers brush across a heap of leaves and he notices some characters on the ground, written in blood. Mooseok’s blood.

I love you. I love you. I love you. Kyungtak stares at the words as they carve themselves in his heart.

He spins around again, feeling pain and love and all other emotion twirl and rush out of his mouth. And he sees Mooseok sitting up, injured arm hanging still at his side, but he is rubbing at his eyes with his left hand, crying. Mooseok is mumbling something but Kyungtak cannot make it out clearly because both of them are crying.

He scrambles towards Mooseok and grabs him in a tight backhug. He feels the other tense as he feels him around his body and then relax and lean back against him.

‘You came back.’

‘I promised you I would.’
