Jaejoong is shuffling through the papers on his desk when his cellphone goes off.

It’s a familiar song, and he’s had the same ring tone for years, but he never tires of it. His husband has the same ringtone for him.

The smile is evident in his voice when he answers.

“Hello, handsome.”

“I think I’m being haunted.”

The smile slides off Jaejoong’s face as he stands up, phone pressed to his ear and the beginning of a furrow evident in his brow.

“What do you mean?”

“Our child.”

“What about our child?”

“He’s haunting me.”

“This isn’t funny, Yunnie-ah. Our son is alive.”

“Yes, and he’s haunting me,” comes the whispered answer.

“Why are you whispering?”

“I’m hiding.”

Jaejoong starts to pace within the confines of his modest office.

“You better talk fast, Yunho.”

“Is it always like this?”

“Is what always like this?”

“Do you feel haunted?”

“I do feel hunted on occasion but I don’t know about haunted.”

“I thought about using hunted, but I think haunted is more appropriate. They’re everywhere.”

Jaejoong huffs in exasperation as he stops at his desk and starts to pack his things with one hand. He needed one afternoon to get this stuff done. Just one. But clearly he needs to utilize the expansive study at home rather than his cluttered office that isn’t even a third of the size of their study.

“Yunho, you’re not making any sense, and you always make sense.”

“They’re making me a little crazy.”

“I’m three seconds away from leaving the office, Yun-ah.”

“No, no, don’t leave. I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Oh god, they’re here.”

Jaejoong’s mouth drops open when Yunho hangs up abruptly, dial tone in his ear. He pulls his mobile to stare at it in consternation.

His eyes dart back and forth from his things on the table to his phone.

It takes him a good minute or so to finally decide that he trusts his husband to look after their infant son who only just started crawling. Jaejoong hates being apart from the baby but thanks to the fact that his son’s world has just expanded by leaps and bounds, he really needs the five hours of child-free time to get enough work done that he can chase the seven month old around the house for the rest of the week.

However, certain words that Yunho used finally penetrates his mind.

They’re here.

Jaejoong quickly presses a number on speed dial.

His call is answered quickly.

“To what do I owe the pleasure, sweetheart?”

“Are the twins with you?”

“I dropped them off at your house about half an hour ago. Yunho said it was fine. What’s wrong?”

Jaejoong shakes his head, deftly stuffing as much paper as he can into his Daniel Damier Graphite. “The baby’s crawling, umma.”

“Oh! Oh my gosh, he is? Are you coming for a visit this weekend?”

“Wouldn’t miss it.”

“Oh that precious angel! Give him a kiss for me.”

“I think it’s more like the devil at this stage,” Jaejoong mumbles under his breath.

“No different from you at that age then, love.” The lady on the phone chuckles fondly. “Yunho should have said he started crawling because I would never have left him with three younguns had I known. Shall I go over and help?”

“It’s ok, umma. I’m going home now. Love you.”

“Love you too, baby boy.”

Jaejoong grumbles at the outdated term of endearment as he hangs up on his laughing mother.

He doesn’t bother calling his husband to tell him he’s on his way home.

The house is unnaturally silent.

Jaejoong drops his car keys into the bowl in the foyer, and the sound is very loud.

It is so silent that he actually doubles back to the garage to see if all their vehicles are there.

All accounted for.

So why is it so quiet?

A quick check of his watch reveals that it isn’t nap time. In fact, this is about the time when his children are at their most active.

So where are they?

He looks around the lower floors.

He even looks in the pantry because he’s definitely found a child or two covered in sugar in there on more than one occasion.

He is staring at the large tree in the backyard when his phone goes off.

“Where are you, love?”

“Haunted. I’m being haunted. I swear I am.”

Jaejoong brow furrows as he hears some noise in the background. Yunho is still whispering though.

“Where are you?”

“In the bathroom.”

“With the children?”

Jaejoong almost laughs at the horror in Yunho’s voice. Nothing ever ruffles his husband, but clearly being home alone for an hour with three children has done a number of the unflappable man. He exits the kitchen, heading upstairs for he now knows the location of his family.

“Jaejoongie, how do you go to the bathroom?”

“I just go.”

“Door open or shut?”

Jaejoong starts to laugh. “Open.”

“They’re here, Jaejoongie. I can’t get away for a second.”

“I usually distract them first if I need the bathroom.”

“I tried that. It didn’t work. I have three shadows.”

“Four shadows. Yours plus them.”

“Jaejoong…” Yunho’s voice is practically a wail. “This isn’t the time to discuss accuracy.”

Considering how exacting his husband is, his whining is testament to how frazzled the man truly is, and Jaejoong is really fighting back laughter now. He keeps it in though, because he knows if he laughs, Yunho may rescind his offer to work from home so Jaejoong can go to university.

“Are you still in the bathroom?”

“I’ve been trying to pee for the last five minutes!”

“And you haven’t?”

“It’s a little hard to pee with an audience.”

“I thought you said the kids weren’t in the bathroom with you? And you left them outside by themselves?”

“Don’t worry. I can see them.”

“You can?” Jaejoong wrinkles his nose in confusion. “The door is shut isn’t it?”

“Just because the door is shut doesn’t mean I can’t see them,” comes the cryptic reply.

Jaejoong enters his bedroom just then, and he almost drops his phone as he slaps his palm across his mouth to keep the laughter from bursting free.

Three little boys are smushed against the bottom of the shut bathroom door, hands and practically even arms underneath the gap.

The older twins are calling out to their father continuously like a broken record, while the younger has his little butt in the air, wiggling it madly as he giggles at the strange game. Both his hands are under in the gap and he keeps butting his head against the shut door and giggling each time he does it.

“Oh dear.”
